Did you see a young girl or an old woman?
"Your perception of others is the product of how you view yourself"
"Perception is how you look at others and the world around you. How you look at the world depends on what you think of yourself"
"Perceptions are the way we view the world and how we interpret situations"
These are some of the views of perception from different people.
One simple question and there is many different answer to it.
Reason is that, we all have our own thinking, own views about different things.
I quite agree with this sentence.
"Your perception of other is the product of how you view yourself." Sometimes, the way we think of others, is actually a reflection of our own thinking, what we really are.
Non verbal communication is the hidden language of emotional intelligence. It is said to be better and important than verbal communication to sustain successful relationship. "Actions speak louder than words." This is an example of non verbal communication.
What is non verbal communcation?
It is about using our facial expression, gesture, body posture, emotions.. etc to communcate. Somtimes, we may be using or have used non verbal communication before, just that we are not aware of it. All of us have non-verbal genes in us, is a matter of whether we are conscious about it or not. Awareness is closely related to non verbal communication. How is it relate than?
For example: If we are not aware of what kind of non-verbal language we are using to communicate, others might have the wrong impression/conclusion about you.
I think non verbal communcation all boils down to listening.
Have you really listen to what your friends, family, people around you are trying to say?
I believed that communication is more than just talking. It is also about listening and it plays an important role in communication.
Listening, as mention above, is not about listening to with your ears. It also requires you to listen with your eyes and heart. The things we see, the things we feel about is all part of non verbal communcation. So, have you really listen to what your friends are saying all along?
Some interesting facts I have found:
The differences in posture at different countries
- Bowing (not done, criticized, or affected in US; shows rank in Japan)
- Slouching (rude in most Northern European areas)
- Hands in pocket (disrespectful in Turkey)
- Sitting with legs crossed (offensive in Ghana, Turkey)
- Showing soles of feet. (Offensive in Thailand, Saudi Arabia)
Pointing :
- US with index finger
- Germany with little finger
- Japanese with entire hand (in fact most Asians consider pointing with index finger to be rude)
Sometimes, we may lie when we speak. However, when we use non verbal communication, somehow, it reflects the truth. It reflects what you really feel/think about something/someone. I guess that, non verbal commuication is something that all of us, including myself, is still learning. If we could effectively pick up the skill of non verbal communication, we would establish a better relationship with our friends or family as we know how to relate to one another.
What is your about perspection and non verbal communication? Feel free to leave some comments. =)

the pictures are v.interesting.
ReplyDeletefor the 1st picture i see a duck and the 2nd one i see a young woman.
But after looking at it for a while i c the rabbit and old woman too...
I think we might have subconsciously eliminated the other option cuz we only believe in the 1st things we see. The proportion of the image also affects what we think. Eg. We never think of rotating the image to see a rabbit...
Here's a picture that i found too..

Innocent children sees dolphins....what do you see. XD
it is so true that what we think of others reflects on us. just like when you're pointing at someone there's always at least 3 fingers pointing back at yourself.
ReplyDeletei think it extends to our opinion of matters and on objectivity or any subject that we formulate our thoughts on.
i think most people after reading each other's blog will have probably gotten the notion that nonverbal is a major factor and element in communication. or rather they realize the importance it plays.
maybe from now on we'll be more alert to reading each other more accurately than just judging a person by what they say.
I see a monster in both!!
ReplyDeleteDoes that make me a monster? :P
OK, jokes aside, I like the sentence you quoted as well, "Your perception of other is the product of how you view yourself."
For example, when you watch a couple kissing on TV or wherever and you go "Eeee~~", people generally will comment "How old are you? Why so childish?" Well, what they are saying isn't untrue at all. You regard yourself as not in the correct of life (or mind) to accept kissing readily, and thus the reaction.
And interesting facts indeed you have there. I'll remember to drag my feet all the time, even up the stairs, if I visit Thailand or Saudi Arabia. Haha.
And did you know that there's also a variance in the degree one should bow according to their status in Japan? :D
adrxuan: Haha, the picture I have seen it before. It is quite interesting. I think we are able to see it because of the indication that the 1st picture is a duck and rabbit and the 2nd picture is a young lady and old woman. If there is no indications, then we might have difficulties in recognising them. =)
ReplyDeletesteaminghotoffthe: Our opinions of matter do play a big part in our preception.
Maverick: Haha, I didn't know that there is a variance in the degree one should bow according to their status in Japan. That's interesting.
Non verbal communication is the loudest form of expression, our actions speak the truth in many areas of our life; as a matter of FACT, 99% of what we communicate is through non-verbal communication. It is interesting how people put more emphasis on what is said rather than examining the facts, like our day to day actions! HMMMMM so interesting!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Its in fact awesome post, I have got much clear idea regarding from this piece of
